It is worth pointing out that this subject is approached with much speculation, mainly due to lack of accurate records covering the time period in question. I shall start firstly, with the little that we DO know.
The village of the 'Newlands' sits a few hundred metres from the course of the roman road, Watling or Dere street. Less than half a mile to the east lies the roman fort and village (still a present day village) of Ebchester.
What is known of the mill for certain is that it was worked for corn up until a point in the late 1800s. The site itself shows evidence of culverts and at least 1 waterwheel pit that relate to the mill.
